Gas vs. Electric Stove: Which Should You Choose?

Gas Vs. Electric Stove: Which Is Best According To Experts

As appliance technicians, we’ve seen our fair share of appliance models and brands, and we’ve come to know which one works best for whom. Still, if we can share some advice, it would be to start by choosing the category first.

That is the case, for instance, with front vs. top-load washers, which we’ve talked about in a previous blog. This is also the case with stoves. Gas vs. electric stove is always a debate.

As appliance experts, we thought it would be helpful to share our input. We’ll break down which is best in today’s blog: gas vs. electric stove.

Gas Stoves

Gas stoves have been around forever, and if you thought they were outdated, many people think otherwise. It may be your case if you’re a cooking enthusiast. Many people wonder, “Do chefs prefer gas or electric stoves?” and most of them would agree that gas cooktops are their favorite. Why?

First of all, chefs love cooking with fire. Not only is it more appealing for them, but it also grants them more control over temperature, a key factor when deciding on gas vs. electric stove. If you want to switch between temperature and heat or cool something faster, a gas stove is perfect for that. You can even do this visibly by looking at the flame, which you don’t get with electric stoves.

But what if you are looking merely at convenience and need to get the food done? The advantage of a gas vs. electric stove is that it works with all your cookware. Some pots and pans will get ruined if you use them on an electric cooktop. They are also cheaper upfront and cost-effective to maintain by regularly cleaning the heat components.

Of course, gas cooktops also have some downsides. First, it does take a while to heat up. The exposed flame can be a concern for you, and troubleshooting the gas components yourself is risky (Find more information here. Still, some models have a low flame despite being in the highest temperature.

Electric Stoves

Not only are electric stoves newer. The latest electric cooktop technology provides two main types of electric stoves: coil vs. flat-top. We’ll see the pros and cons of both.

We are confident the sleek flat-top design will look amazing in your kitchen and will be easier to clean. Apart from this, an electric cooktop is available at an excellent price point. You may, however, question, “Is a gas stove cheaper to run than an electric?” The answer can be a yes, but this depends on how much you cook.

An electric coil stove can be harder to clean. The downsides to both types are that they take a while to heat, switch temperatures, and come with a learning curve to get perfect control. And don’t forget to get flat cookware for these!

  • Do I expect to see savings in the long run?
  • Do I have the right cookware, or do I need to invest in more?
